Control Your Environment. Open Your World!
Environmental Control Units (ECU’s), or Electronics Aids for Daily Living (EADLs) as they are sometimes called, are voice
and/or switch operated devices enabling persons with physical or neuromuscular disabilities to control their environment and
open their world. ECU’s provide increased independence in a home, hospital or rehabilitation facility setting, allowing the
user to control and operate everyday items easily and effectively. ECU’s increase quality of life and help return (or maintain)
independent living.
What does an ECU do?
Environmental Controls Units offer a wide and diverse range of controls for many products and devices. The number of devices
and items controlled by the ECU are based on the complexity of the chosen technology. ECU’s can:
Turn on lights and appliances
Operate Remote Controlled devices such as TV
Control a telephone
Activate Electric Bed functions
Operate door openers
And many others daily living products
How is an ECU controlled?
Environmental Control Units are controlled and accessed by voice, by switch, or by a combination of both. The various
methods of switch control are based on the abilities of the end user and can be modified and custom mounted to match the
individual’s needs. A few switch types include: breath switches (commonly called Sip and Puff), pressure switches, single
and dual switches, and sensor (IR Beam) switches. Voice control is primarily dependent upon consistency of voice.
How does the ECU control electrical and Infrared (IR) devices?
Environmental Control Units operate electrical items by using X-10 and/or Insteon communication technology that utilizes the
existing wiring in a home or hospital to send control signals to a particular device turning its power on or off.
Infrared (IR) control of common items such as TV, Satellite, DVD, etc is operated by the ECU transmitting the same IR signals
as the remote control that came with the particular device. IR control signals can either be “learned” by the ECU or pre-pro-
grammed.
